"Automated Malware Analysis"

Malicious software (malware) is an important threat and root cause of many security problems on the Internet. In this talk, I will discuss our recent efforts on malware analysis, detection, and mitigation. First, I will introduce our infrastructure to collect and analyze malicious code samples. Then, I will present techniques to improve the quality of the results produced by automated, dynamic malware analysis systems. Finally, I will discuss ways in which these results can be leveraged for the detection and mitigation of malicious code.

Bio: Christopher Kruegel is an Associate Professor and the holder of the Eugene Aas Chair in the Computer Science Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research interests are computer and communications security, with an emphasis on malware analysis and detection, web security, and intrusion detection. Christopher enjoys to build systems and to make security tools available to the public. He has published more than 90 conference and journal papers. Christopher is a recent recipient of the NSF CAREER Award, the MIT Technology Review TR35 Award for young innovators, an IBM Faculty Award, and several best paper awards.
