"The Security Mindset and the World Beyond Security"

The security mindset is a perspective and a set of skills that teaches us to spot how systems might fail --or be made to fail. This mindset can be applied to all sorts of systems. In this talk, I will share what I have learnedfrom applying my security training to a range of problems not traditionally considered security problems, such asalgorithmic fairness and dark patterns (i.e. manipulative user interfaces). My thesis is that security researchers'skills are applicable to — and sorely needed in — a range of domains, but doing this successfully requires letting go ofsome of the dogmas in the security community.

Bio: Arvind Narayanan is an associate professor of computer science at Princeton. He leads the Princeton WebTransparency and Accountability Project to uncover how companies collect and use our personal information. Narayananco-created a Massive Open Online Course and textbook on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency technologies which has been used inover 150 courses worldwide. His recent work has shown how machine learning reflects cultural stereotypes, and hisdoctoral research showed the fundamental limits of de-identification. Narayanan is a recipient of the Presidential EarlyCareer Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), twice recipient of the Privacy Enhancing Technologies Award, andthrice recipient of the Privacy Papers for Policy Ma
