Achieving climate neutrality in aviation demands a clearly structured roadmap for the integration of disruptive technologies and innovative operational concepts. Hybrid-electric propulsion systems and novel wing configurations offer promising opportunities to reduce emissions, yet their adoption introduces significant complexity in the early stages of aircraft design. These technologies involve unconventional architectures and mission-level energy management strategies that lack historical design precedents, increasing uncertainty and challenging traditional methods.
Bio: To address these challenges, Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) offers a rigorous framework that formulates aircraft design as a numerical optimization problem. It integrates analyses from multiple disciplines into a unified environment, enabling the simultaneous optimization of key performance metrics and supporting the development of balanced, high-efficiency concepts.
